Oil Derricks, 49H: 1954-1960
Type 3
This group of Oil Derricks is identified by the brick red clay of the era. Because of the relatively short run of Derricks on the red Sapulpa clay these examples are at least as hard to find as sets from the two Ada clay groups.
The extensive use of this mold for the 1957 semi-centennial celebration about doubled the number of Sapulpa clay sets available to the collector. I will list those 1957 sets in the Advertising and Comemorative section.
These are the best years of the Frankoma rutile glazes and this shape is a showpiece for these two-toned glazes. The old stand-bys prairie green and desert gold take on new life with the red clay. In addition this group is also available in brown satin and woodland moss.
The Type 3's are again without base marks and the plug depression is the deeper sharp-edged one.
